Given my punky past, add the word “core” to the end of most words, and I at least have to check it out. Normcore is a fashion movement that I’ve recently heard about, and it appeared on my radar with Gap’s “Dress Normal” campaign. My first reaction was, “No, YOU dress normal. Your face should dress normal.” Of course I own plenty of basic “normal” clothes, but I’ve never decided to wear them all at once, and lately I feel a bit naked without a statement necklace or some kind of colorful print. This normcore look, while it appears to be relaxed, was quite difficult for me to put together.
Even the natural makeup required restraint. I had to hold myself back from grabbing my orange-red lipstick, which would be my “normal” style choice to balance a look with so little color. I couldn’t help but to sneak a novelty print on my scarf, which is surreptitiously covered in hummingbirds, and was the result of a minor freakout of having “no neck accessory!”
Here’s one without the scarf so you can behold all the grayness of my tank top. While I enjoyed my self-imposed makeunder for the day, I’m not so sure normcore is a place where I can live forever. Bring on the polka dots!
Have you simplified your look lately? Let me know in the comments! Thanks for sharing a not-so-normal day with me!
