DSC_0540_Fotorfullredux Fashion inspiration can come from so many places: street style, nature, and, of course, celebrities! In my new series, “You’re a Star,” I pick celebs and build outfits around their signature styles, adding my own special twists. Keep in mind, I use the term “celebrity” quite broadly: anyone from mega-stars, living legends, cult classic icons, musicians, comedians, fictional characters, and I may even throw a guy or two into the mix. You can probably guess from the title whose style I’m stealing today:

That’s right – it’s Ms. Audrey Hepburn! You may be wondering, “What’s with all the neon and animal print? Audrey never wore that.” The fun thing about celebrity style is you can start with a signature piece and add your own pizazz from there.

DSC_0534_FotormediumshotreduxWhen most people think of the classic star, they remember her little black dress a la Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I feel this LBD fits the bill, with a little something extra with the angular neckline.

DSC_0527_FotorglittereyereduxI also kept Audrey’s iconic cat eye, but the twist is a little bit of glitter eyeshadow just below my eyebrows. In case you’re wondering, the shadow is Urban Decay’s Moondust in Stargazer. I keep the sparkle going with luxe rhinestone cluster earrings.

DSC_0556_FotorfeetreduxThe animal prints on the bag and sandals are unexpected and, dare I say, ’80s influenced. Today is pretty gray, and I wanted to wear something to brighten things up.

DSC_0548_Fotorfull2reduxStar style often motivates me try something new when I’ve been stuck wearing the same old, same old. Which celebrities do you think have great fashion sense? Is there anyone whose style you’d like for me to try in an upcoming “You’re a Star?” Let me know in the comments!

Thanks for stopping by, superstars!

imwalkingherereduxI rarely wear heels in public. You know the saying, “practice makes perfect?” Well, I haven’t practiced wearing them very much mainly because with EE width feet, it’s difficult to find pairs of heels that are cute, comfortable, and will allow me to stay balanced while walking. I do wear heels occasionally for pictures on flat surfaces, but gravel is another story. For every picture like the one above, there’s one like this:

likewhoareduxThat was a close one! I did manage to stay on my feet, so no worries. Also, I’m beginning to embrace the rusty farm equipment near my house. It creates a nice atmosphere, don’t ya think?

mediumreduxMy dress is by Hell Bunny. I always giggle when I look the brand up online because auto-correct wants to change it to “He’ll Bunny.” Personally, I would go with “Heck Bunny,” but that’s just me. I’ve seen Hell Bunny dresses many places from Modcloth to Hot Topic; however, this one is from Gwynnie Bee. Full disclosure, the dress is not in perfect condition. I’m pretty sure I wasn’t the first GB subscriber to wear it as the polka dots are slightly faded and there are imperfections on the print in inconspicuous places. I know many of you ladies shop at thrift stores, so I looked at the dress from that point of view, and I decided it was a keeper!

Well, look who’s back! I know it’s been a while, but I hope you like what you see. Check out my site’s new look! My good friend, fellow belly dancer, and future roomie, Kristi designed the title banner above as well as some nice business cards and graphics to use on social media. If you’re looking for a graphic designer, she’s your girl! Check out her work on her Facebook page. I’ll also be taking some (hopefully) better pictures with my new DSLR camera. I’m still learning how to use it, and I’m waiting for my Dummies book to arrive, so hang in there with me while I figure it all out. I’ve also updated my About and Where to Shop pages, so take a look at those for some extra info.

What’s been going on since I last posted? I decided to resign my job at 2nd and Charles. The main reason was money out was exceeding money in with work expenses, and I want to pursue work more aligned with my education and experience in writing, PR, and broadcasting–something in the marketing field, perhaps, though I’m open to other things. I live in a rural area and the commute on a retail salary was a bit much in fuel and other costs, but I will miss seeing my friends, former co-workers, and of course, the records and books, on a daily basis. It’s been a great nine years with Books-A-Million, Inc.

Scoots

In sadder news, I lost a buddy of mine. Our oldest family dog, Scooter passed due to cancer. He showed up at my parents house as a very small puppy while I was still living in San Antonio, and I moved home shortly after. He had a happy eleven years living in the country, and I’ll miss him bunches.

I’ve been gearing up for my first Renaissance faire as a belly dancer! My friend and teacher, Jacquie (above in burgundy, Kristi is on the right in green) runs Pandorium Belly Dance, and has been teaching me all kinds of cool dance moves and neat tricks, such as balancing a scimitar (sword) on my head and learning to play the zils (finger cymbals). All the dancers have been practicing really hard for the faire in November. Look forward to more Ren Faire inspired posts, and if you want to find out more about all the happenings at the Louisiana Renaissance Faire, check out their webpage here.

0909StyleGalleryIt’s outfit time! I’ve decided to join my blogging buddy, Lei-Loni of Clothe Your Curves, in her 30 Day Style Challenge. She’s on day 15, which means she’s halfway there! While she’s challenging herself to do posts using only what’s currently in her closet, I’ve decided to simply to do an outfit post everyday because I’m only human and can’t resist picking up something new for that long; however, I do anticipate using mostly what I already own “because unemployment.” I’m happy I’m taking the challenge this time of year because of how I hope the weather will change in my neck of the woods. It still feels like summer here in Louisiana, but on day thirty it will be mid-October, and we should be seeing and feeling autumn. I think it will be neat to see how my wardrobe will transition to cooler temperatures day-by-day. I can’t wait for cardigan weather!

skirt edit2I’ve been itching to do an outfit post in this dress ever since I made my ModHaul video. It is a Bernie Dexter, and a while back I almost pulled a Cher Horowitz since I’m new to the world of retro-style dresses and said “he” is such a great designer. Turns out Bernie is a she, a gorgeous pin up model, and she makes some great dresses! Unfortunately, most of what I find by Bernie only goes up to size 2XL, but I was super lucky to find this one from ModCloth in 4X on sale before it went away. As you all know, I love a poppy print! I hesitate to call my under-skirt,
eShakti Women’s Dahlia crinoline
, a petticoat because it actually is meant to be a tulle skirt on its own. (Shoes: Zappos; Bracelet: Cato Fashions)

Also, I’ll be pinning similar items to the ones I’m wearing if they’re no longer available. Thank you for stopping by! I look forward to fun things here at Super Style Me and in my life, and I’d love for you all to join me for the ride!

Yep. It’s my birthday! I have no big plans for today other than to take it easy, which is a-okay with me. I tend to do all of my partying on so-called ordinary days, and it’s usually impromptu and for no reason at all. I might eat cake, though. Haha, “might”–that’s funny. Anyhoo, here are some things that currently put me in a celebratory mood:

Fashion

I know they announced this a while back, but I’m so stoked about the ModCloth/Nicolette Mason collab, I can’t wait until Rocktober! Go to Nicolette’s blog to see all of the cute dresses, skirts, and tops–and you gotta check out the pink trench coat! Go look now! C’mon…I’ll wait.

.

Cool! You’re back! Neat, right?

Beauty

You can’t have a birthday without a little confetti! Just when I was getting the hang of the cat-eye, the Beauty Department steps it up with this tutorial. Maybe it’s the perfect excuse to try those colorful Lime Crime liners I’ve been eye-ing.

Fragrance

I’ve made no secrets that poppies are my jam. Why not smell like a poppy? Coach’s Poppy fragrances are lovely in every incarnation. I got a bottle as a Christmas gift, and I’m still in love.

Books

To be honest, I was unaware of Nasty Gal before I started blogging. When I saw this book cover popping up here and there all over Instagram, I was #curious. I’m in the middle of reading #GIRLBOSS right now, and so far it’s #AWESOME! Sophia, a once self-professed “crust punk,” built her own fashion empire with some vintage clothes, hard work, and street smarts. Part motivational, part cautionary tale, this book proves you don’t have to be perfect to be successful. Like it or not, birthdays are reflective, and lately I’m finding myself at a crossroads in the best way possible. After going through a some not-so-fun years, following my gut to pursue blogging has been a wonderful education that I’ve been able to bring into other aspects of my life, including doing some fun stuff at my day job where I’m dabbling more and more in social media and marketing–which I would have been pretty ill-informed about had I not messed up at previous jobs only try it again for Super Style Me. It seems strange to call someone even younger than I am wise, but Sophia is that and more. Her story and advice help me feel I’m going in the right direction with this new venture. There’s much to learn, but that’s okay. I’ll figure it out just as she did. And, every bad experience, bad decision, and bad day just bring you one step closer to something much, much better.

Music

I included this album on my birthday favorites because it contains so many hidden “presents,” but don’t take it from me–here’s a video from Jack to tell you all about it:

So cool! Here’s my own low-quality video of the locked groove and angel hologram. Yes, the angel is upside-down. She’s break-dancing:

P.S. The music is actually good! You didn’t think they’d put in all these bells and whistles and forget about the songs? If you did, you don’t know Jack 😉

And this:

I’m so glad this is back in stock today and in my size, but, really, dinosaur print on my birthday? That’s not nice, ModCloth!

Thanks to you all for stopping by! Celebrate anything you want today!

Welcome to something new on Super Style Me! In “A Case of the Fridays,” I’ll feature what I’m into nowadays whether it be fashion, beauty, or entertainment-related. I’ve seen many-a-blogger do Friday favorites, and I’m joining the club! I’ll provide the links here, but also check out my Pinterest and YouTube channel for all that tickles my Friday fancy!

Fashion

Although we’re still in the dead-middle of summer in South Louisiana, fashion-wise I’m fast-forwarding to fall. While things are improving by leaps and bounds for plus size fashion, there are still garments I have a difficult time finding, namely coats and heavier jackets. My big mistake is I wait too long. I’m learning I have to act fast on season-specific items (swimwear also falls into this category) to get something I like and not have to make do with the frumpy leftovers. I love the above Myrtlewood trench by Modcloth, and I know I’m going to have to order it soon to make sure I get one!

Jenny, Jenny!

I recently ordered a Jenny dress and skirt from Pinup Girl Clothing, and I’m in love! The fit is perfect, and I’m wearing the dress in a novelty print to do a cosplay at work tomorrow. Because of the price and high-quality, Jenny is clearly an investment piece which is why I’m considering ordering one dress in a solid color in order to get a lot of wear out of it. Maybe they’ll make one soon in red…(hint! hint!)

Beauty

Chocolate eyeshadow. I could stop there, right? This sweet-smelling Too Faced palette actually contains cocoa powder. It is surprisingly versatile, too. It’s full of neutral colors with a touch of purple. I got it a couple of months ago, and I find myself wearing it everyday.

Blogs

Flock Together: These ladies take swapping clothes with friends to the next level. Everyone in the group has their own individual fashion blog, and by the magic of the postal service, they trade clothes cross-country so you get several takes on the same garment. Ingenious idea! I’d love to develop a plus sized version of this…any takers? I included no pics of this blog because I want you to go to there already!

Books

Hey! It’s that guy! You know, Ryan from The Office. If you’ve been wondering what he’s been doing since, check out this collection of stories. Some are funny, some are heart-felt, and many are both. Newsflash: he’s smart. Like, Harvard smart–probably because he went there. I must admit, I didn’t actually “read” this one. I listened to it on audiobook during a long road trip to South Carolina. I do recommend listening to humorous books, especially when they’re read by the author, because it feels like sharing stories and laughing with a good friend. Thanks for keeping me company, dude!

Television

Later…with Jools Holland

Ever wanted to get your favorite bands and musicians and put them together in one room? This BBC show does just that! Each show has a line-up to rival any summer music festival. I always wonder how they do it. They’ll have someone legendary like Paul McCartney, then a hip group like Vampire Weekend, followed by an up-and-comer like Little Dragon. I always go all fangirl when I watch it. And, as you see in the above video with Jack White, Jools, who was a member of the British band Squeeze (one of my ’80s faves), plays a little bit, too. Catch Later…with Jools Holland in ‘Merica on the Palladia channel.

Music

St. Vincent: I think I’m late to realizing how awesome she is. She has several albums out already, and her new self-titled one is the first I’ve heard. She’s even made an album with David Byrne that I need to check out. Time to catch up!

Phantogram: This is one of my favorite new bands! Their second album, Voices, came out not too long ago, but this is a track from their first one.

I hope my picks put you in a Friday kind of mood! If you’d like to share some of your favorite things, leave me a comment!

See ya later!

July Modcloth Haul

July 23, 2014 — 4 Comments

When I began this little blogging adventure, I thought I’d be sharing my own static ideas about style and fashion. I had no idea through blogging, shopping new places, and following other bloggers that my style would change, and I couldn’t be happier! While my jeans and leggings aren’t quite a thing of the past, I’m now more often choosing dresses, dresses, and more dresses! Blame it on seeing all of the fabulous dress-wearing ladies on blogs and on Instagram, having a better idea of where cute, retro dresses are available in my size, or trying to deal in the hot Louisiana weather. Needless to say, when Modcloth announced their 50% off sale, I was all about it. I was also notified that many of my wishlist items were part of the sale. It was so nice, I had to order twice! Check out the following video showing all the great clothes I scored for half-price:

The good news is the sale is still going on. The bad news is that certain items are going out of stock or are now only available in certain sizes. Do you recognize a couple of the dresses? It’s because I featured them in my Poppy Picks post. Well, they’re mine now! Hooray!

Here are links to the items I featured on the video:

L-R ONE TWO THREE FOUR

Order #1: L-R: ONE// TWO// THREE// FOUR

Order #2: L-R: ONE//TWO//THREE

Order #2: L-R: ONE//TWO//THREE

I’ve already starting taking outfit pics in some of these garments, and I can’t wait to show them off. I’m also excited about how some of these pieces will transition from summer to fall. I have a million ideas for that romper!

What was the last time you scored big on a great sale? I’d love to hear about it in the comments! Thanks for stopping by and taking a look at my video. P.S. There are new and exciting things coming soon to the blog, so stay tuned! See ya next time!

Poppy Picks!

June 19, 2014 — 1 Comment

IMG_2603

Am I celebrating my birthday a bit too early? The poppy is the flower for those of us born in August, and being an August baby myself, lately I’ve been gravitating toward poppy prints. I have great memories of my mom planting poppies for me as a kid–she also planted daffodils for my sister, born in March. This isn’t the first time I’ve worn poppies on the blog, and I keep finding more and more great poppy pieces! Not crazy about poppies? Remember this is a blog about developing your own personal style, and poppies just happen to be my thing. Think about your own favorite things when picking out clothes and accessories. Do you like astronomy? How about a dress in a galaxy print! Got a cute kitten at home? Try some cat-eye sunnies! You see what I mean! Nonetheless, I hope you like my poppy picks from around the web.

First, the outfit of the day:

BeccaPoppyDress2

This is another fun Lucie Lu dress from Gwynnie Bee! I hoped that they would send me this one, and I’m so glad it worked. My sandals are from Torrid, and they’re a couple of years old. I had a tough time accessorizing this outfit, though, so I kept it simple…

IMG_2617

I decided to keep the accessories birthday-themed with both of my necklaces featuring my zodiac sign. Go LEO! The script necklace is from Shop Soul, and the constellation necklace is from Charming Charlie.

IMG_0610

Remember this outfit? This poppy skirt is still available at Modcloth! Here’s the original post for the rest of the outfit’s details.

Of course we can’t talk about poppies without mentioning this classic Marimekko print. You can find on tons of fashion and home items in different colorways. You can even buy the fabric here!

Here are some sweet retro-inspired poppy print dresses:

–and this skirt!

Of course you need a purse! I’ve ordered from Queen Bee Creations a few times. Their bags are cute and durable!

I’ve also featured more of my poppy favorites on Pinterest including lots of amazing jewelry and artwork from Etsy sellers. I hope you enjoy! As for me, I’m off to see the wizard!

IMG_2577

Not too long ago, I posted an article about taking a break from shopping for a couple of months. That didn’t happen. I have, however, been more careful with my spending which was the goal in the first place, so…yay! I mentioned in that article trying out Gwynnie Bee. The best thing to compare them to is the snail mail version of Netflix, but instead of sending you DVDs, you get articles of clothing (ranging from sizes 10 – 32) from items you put in your virtual closet. You can wear what they send you until you’re bored with it and send it back, or if you love what you get, you can buy it at an extremely reduced price. The number of garments you have out at a time depends on which subscription plan you have, and right now they’re offering a free 30-day trial. I’m in the middle of my 2 garments at a time trial, to which they added and extra week because of reorganizing going on at their distribution center.

These were the first two dresses they sent me:

They didn’t work out. They looked cute on the site, but there were definite quality issues with both dresses. On the first one, the lining flipped out at the neck, and the shawl collar and drawstring belt on the second one looked sloppy. The material on both were not so great either, so they both went back. I was wondering if I should continue with the trial. The first two dresses were the same brand; however, I had experience with some of the other brands that GB offers, like Kiyonna, and knew that they are high-quality. I proceeded by removing all of the Spruce & Sage dresses from my closet, and I’ve had much better luck since!

IMG_2579I’ve actually bought three of the dresses they sent me, all by Lucie Lu, and the prices were great–especially since I’m still in the trial period. I will continue with the paid membership. I’m glad that if something doesn’t work, I can send it back, or if I love it, it can be mine!

Try Again

June 2, 2014 — 2 Comments

IMG_2319

Does this dress look familiar? I’ve worn it on the blog before, as a skirt, here. Kinda blah, right? Honestly this convertible dress/skirt from Kiyonna has been sort of a problem child from the get-go. I originally ordered it a size bigger, but had to send it back. My waist is obviously much bigger than my bust, so it worked as a skirt, but as a dress, not so much. The problem didn’t completely resolve itself with the smaller size, but I was able to make it work by pinning it to my bra. I love the above outfit much more than my first go-round which goes to show some pieces of clothes deserve another chance!

IMG_2323

I have been in the market for a denim vest for a couple of years now, and until I came across this one from Lane Bryant, I had a tough time finding one I liked. I decided to dress up this casual outfit with gold accessories, like this fox necklace and earring set from Fossil and this vintage brooch from Femme DeBloom’s Etsy shop.

IMG_2343

Even my shoes are gold, and I love the bling on the heel! They’re from Jessica London.

IMG_2317

I took these pictures last week right before we had tons and tons of rain. There’s still stormy weather in the forecast. Looks like I gotta get more creative with taking indoor outfit picks! Thanks for stopping by!

IMG_2440 copy

When the lovely people at Modcloth gave me a gift card for their Spring-Time to Shine contest, I knew exactly which dress from my wishlist I wanted to buy with it! I’m new to the glasses club, only having worn them for a couple of years now, and I feel like the Clear as Day Off dress is the perfect way to make a spectacle of myself (haha). I kept this outfit simple, only adding a Lane Bryant belt and some black flats from Zappos. I feel like I’m channeling my inner Enid from Ghost World.

IMG_2441

Now is a good time to mention two of my new Pinterest boards! On my Oh, So Close! board, I pin similar items to the ones I wear on the blog that are no longer available. Also, I have my Great Gals Dress Alike board where I search the web for fashionistas who are wearing some of the same things I wear here. Check out all of my boards to see what I’m obsessing about on a daily basis. As always, thanks for stopping by!
